Whilst it has long been known that breastfeeding can delay the return to fertility it wasn't until 1988 that expert scientists in Bellagio Italy concluded that women who are Breastfeeding and follow a criteria of fully or nearly fully breastfeeding, have not had a return of menses in the first 6 months after delivery are likely to experience a risk of pregnancy of less than 2% in the first 6 months after delivery of their baby.
The efficacy of LAM has now been well established as an additional method that increases the family planning choices for postpartum women.
